Regardless of the danger, Team News Corp continued to drive hard on a course that took them to near 60 degrees south. The next day they were in the lead â¦
Ross:
Day 8 â Sailing in 23 knots from the southwest, spinnaker and full main. We are making a good 17 knots. Very pleasant sailing, but itâs cold, very cold. Had snow earlier on this morning and have only sighted one iceberg, which is very encouraging but it will still be the full radar watch tonight. Life onboard is the same old eat, sleep and sail. Just got up for the next watch (had been dreaming about a warm, dry bed â instead of a cold, damp sleeping bag) and am waiting on lunch â nasi goreng with rice â nothing like you get at home, but it will fill the gap.
Cape Horn is seven days away and then weâll be heading north. The cold down here slowly gets to you â¦
Nick:
Day 8 â Icebergs are very scary things ⦠and I have a faint suspicion that they donât go to sleep at night as some people have theorised. Maybe Iâm getting older and learning just how precarious our existence is. All I know is that they worry me a lot more than they did eight years ago. Maybe the fascination of seeing an iceberg has worn off. We know that it is better to pass them to leeward as âbergs drift faster with the wind than the broken-off growlers, which are much harder to see.
â¦Everything is damp on board and the boat seems to continually develop new places to let the water in. The slosh of ice-cold water in the leeward bilge beside my nav. station is not a very warming sound. So it is surprising how cheerful everyone is and how good the team spirit is. We havenât made the most of our lead, but we still have it, so things could be worse.
