“FOR GOD’S sake!” came shouting through the door. “I thought I told you to ge–”

Jasper stopped short when he realized it was Finn, not his mother. “Only me,” Finn said, giving him a kiss on the cheek before brushing past.

“Sorry.” Jasper was visibly happy to receive his coffee. Before he went back to the kitchen to continue preparing dinner, he took a sip and it seemed to visibly calm him down. “My mom was just here, throwing her weight around.”

“I just saw her outside.”

“You met my mom?”

“Yeah. She’s, uhh, interesting? She mostly talked at me instead of to me.”

“That’s kinda her thing.” Jasper rolled his eyes. “She’s never been this cold and distant. I mean, she’s always been aloof, but it’s gotten worse since I got trapped. Beats me. She also loves a bit of mage-human prejudice.”

“Oh,” Finn gasped. “That’s why she was looking at me like I’d grown two heads? Can she sense that I’m not one of yours or something?”

When Jasper nodded gently, an apology was written in his eyes. “Did she manage to talk about anything but herself?”

Finn shrugged, unsure how to proceed. Jasper’s mom had imparted some useful knowledge, and it felt weird to keep it to himself. And yet, if what she said was true, that Jasper had to figure out how do it alone, that it was a journey of self-discovery, filling Jasper’s head with information Finn knew little about might only serve to endanger him further.

If he wasn’t careful, Finn could undo Jasper’s progress and set him back double the number of months he’d already spent holed up. He probably wouldn’t appreciate that very much.

In the spirit of keeping his best interest at heart, it was probably better for Finn to keep quiet.
