Chapter 11

I gave it until a count of two hundred before making my way to the door, opening it slowly, and peeking around outside. Two guards were stationed there, as always. No matter. Two I could deal with. The rest I’d have to play by ear because for many reasons, I could not stay here.

Firstly, I’d grown entirely too comfortable for a paladin in a demon city. Part of me, some unknown part, was a demon. But not all of me. Which meant that I had a little over a day to sort out my shit and get out of here, or I’d go from having dates with Lucius to dying at his hand.

Then there was the other matter: evil celestials. If that was true, I had to warn the Order. I trusted Lucius enough to know he wasn’t lying about the threat they presented, but who better was there to ask for information about these evil celestials than the Keepers of the Light? The high-up paladins who worked in consort with scholars around the world? I was the Order’s leader, but I by no means led alone the worship and history-keeping of everything the Order knew.

The Order needed to know about this threat. Then, maybe, I could talk to them about forming an alliance—however temporary it might be—with this particular demon king to fight against the evil celestials. Again, assuming all of this was true. Because if it was and I died before I could tell the Order, then there’d be no alliance with the Angel of Death. Ever. Just another leader killed at his hand, and a whole lot of animosity.

But I couldn’t get word to the Order here. And I’d be dead in just over a day if I did nothing.

I was never good at doing nothing.

I hurried to the wardrobe and pulled a tunic shirt out of it, ripping it length-wise until I had a few strips of sturdy cloth.

I hoped it was sturdy enough. Because without access to my magic and real weapons, I’d be relying on training and hand-to-hand skill to get the hell out of this castle.

With a deep breath, I steeled myself, wrapped the ends of each strip of cloth around both of my fists, and opened the door. Before the first guard even had a chance to react, I lunged, aiming to get the cloth around his neck. He was tall, and quite a brute with dark red hair and bright eyes, but I managed to hang on, pulling down and back behind him. The second guard, a lithe female with blonde hair, jumped immediately into action. Magic built in her palms, but I stepped out of the attack. Her fireball churned and slammed into the wall behind me and my captive, charring it. I hung on with everything I had and was rewarded when the guard finally passed out in my arms.

I was magic-less, but I was not powerless.

I lunged at the woman next, and we exchanged fists, both of us dodging deftly.
