The air changed and the pressure dropped, only adding to the impending panic that filled the area surrounding the fields.
My hands trembled as I fought to tie the last sapling to a stake, the pressure of performing in the storm adding difficulties to a normally easy task. The twine was drenched and the hard rain was hurting my back but I had to get this done or they wouldn't survive.
"Come on!" I fumbled with the twine, making terrible knots that wouldn't have passed under different circumstances. But it was more important for me to get the saplings secure than to make sure my knots were presentable.
I finished securing the final one. At least the sapling was secured now. That was all of them, and I was relieved I'd ignored Ryburn's advice of not doing any of the planting myself. Otherwise, I'd never have gotten this done in time.
A heavy gust of wind whirled some loose debris through the air and tugged on the leaves, putting the thin stake to the ultimate test. I didn't want to think about the outcome but there was nothing else I could do. I was no match for nature.
Lightning carved through the sky and a loud crack of thunder had me running for shelter. I hated abandoning my saplings but they all had stakes to keep them upright whereas I was something untethered without roots. Another flash of lightning gave me a glimpse of a figure at the top of the field, the blue glow emitting from it making me wonder if it was Eva.
Was she conjuring this storm? It certainly looked like it.
This was why my mother warned me about weather witches. She'd always told me that they weren't to be trusted, but I hadn't listened and I'd let her call the weather because it was convenient.
The curtain of rain made it impossible to confront her so I kept running. Most of the workers had bailed as soon as it had become clear that the storm was going to be a bad one. They'd probably made it back to the Oasis, but with the way the storm was building, that wasn't going to be possible for me.
The tool shed would have to do.
I paused at the door, glancing over to where Eva was still standing. For a brief moment, I considered whether I should get her, but from the way she was standing, it almost seemed like she was enjoying the storm.
I pulled the door closed. If she needed shelter, she'd find it. For all I knew, she was getting power from the storm.
The heavy rain clattered on the plastic roof and dripped in through some of the cracks, wetting the stacks of tools underneath. A shiver ran down my spine from the sudden change in temperature, and I couldn't help but worry about the crops outside. We hadn't been prepared for a heavy downpour like this.
What was the point in having weather witches if we weren't able to prepare for changes?
