“You remind me of somebody,” Garrett had said to Mimi a few days later, squinting at her over beers in their backyard. Only years afterward did she learn that it was his fiancée, that harlot who’d abandoned him at the altar, that she reminded him of. As a trio—she and Garrett and her husband—they’d grown close fast. No doubt it was because she seemed familiar. And he didn’t seem to hold it against her that she was like his enemy, the woman who had ruined his life. He’d loved her, after all, before he’d hated her.

Garrett’s most recent visit, to borrow the snake, to give Mimi a hug, and to make her face turn red, sent her to e-mail, where she composed a note to Gary Silver. “Hey there, remember me?” For a long while she paused, the flashing cursor on the monitor pulsing like her heightened heartbeat. What tone did she wish to take? What trouble did she wish to make? “I miss you,” she wrote, and sent the message before she could reconsider. And before she could get up from the desk, an answer appeared. “I miss you, too. I’ve been thinking about you a lot.”

And then, not three seconds later, another incoming: “A whole lot. xo”

Mimi had never employed an X or an O to express her feelings. She wondered how Gary meant them to resonate. “Maybe I’ll be out that way again,” she wrote.

“I hope you will!”

“I’ll let you know,” she wrote and then, after synchronizing her heart to the cursor, attached her own X and O.
