MEREDITH GOT UP EARLY and ran four miles, her excess nervousness forcing her to release the energy or explode. When she came back, Haden was still asleep and the sight of him in the other bed undid all the good her run had just done.
She was dressed and eating breakfast in the dining room when he finally showed up. Sonia greeted him at the door with a smile and fresh fruit. She handed him the plate then turned and picked up a coffee pot from the sideboard. âWould you like some café, señor? I have bread coming out of the oven in five minutes.â
Meredith watched; Delgatoâs smile was as warm as the coffee she was offering.
Haden responded with a grin of his own. âThank you, Sonia, that would be great.â
The exchange grated on Meredithâs nerves and the fact that it did bothered her even more. She was acting like some kind of hormonal teenager, for Godâs sake, one minute attracted to Haden, the next distrustful and cautious. Sheâd faked being asleep after heâd come out of the bathroom last night, but sheâd felt his eyes on her in the dark. Sheâd wanted to ask him what he was thinking and why he was doing what he was doing. Sheâd wanted to sit beside him and talk for hours like they had before. But she couldnât. And that made her mad as well.
When he came to the table and sat, she spoke brusquely. âAnother of Sr. Gomezâs âcousinsâ found me this morning while I was running.â
Haden tilted his head.
âSheâs lucky to be alive.â Stabbing a slice of pine apple with her fork, Meredith recounted the episode. âShe grabbed me just as I went around a corner and I reacted before I realized what was going on.â
âHow many holes did you put in the poor girl?â
Meredith felt her mouth go tight. âShe gave me an address,â she said. âIâm leaving in five minutes. Iâll be back by eleven. I assume youâll be here?â
âIâm going with you.â
âNo, youâre not.â
âI want to hear whatâs said.â
âIâll tell you when I return.â
They stared at each other from across the table, then after a second, Haden leaned closer. âWhatâs wrong with you this morning?â
âI keep my network confidential,â she said. âPeople wonât talk if I show up with an entourage.â
âIâm one person,â he said calmly. âAnd whoever he is, your man would talk to a stadium full of people, if you pay him enough. Donât treat me like I donât know whatâs happening.â
âI donât know this guy,â she argued. âIf you show up, it could spook himââ
Haden took her chin in his fingers, his touch soft, his voice low. âWhat are you doing, Meredith? Are you trying to make me not trust you? If you are, itâs working.â
She felt relief that heâd misunderstood her emotions but it didnât last long. âIâm trying to do this the right way.â She moved her chin away from his hand. âWe need some information if weâre going to find Vegaâs compound. Your girlfriend was a little lacking in the details.
