Chapter Eleven

Gideon and Jacob materialized on a metal fire escape outside a window. Gideon tried to take a step back but his foot slipped and Jacob grabbed his arm.

“Careful.”

“Fuck!” Gideon muttered. “That was a helluva ride. Where the hell are we?”

“Outside Ella’s apartment. This is how she escaped him.” Jacob pointed into the room. “He got drunk and beat her before passing out.”

Gideon looked around his wide shoulders. “And he’s still passed out. What’s your plan, Jacob? How are we going to avenge Ella?”

Jacob held up his hand and for a moment, it misted into a ghostly appendage. “My instinct is to touch him. To turn him into what I was.”

“But? I feel like there was supposed to be a but at the end.”

“But … do I have that right? I know what the curse feels like. It’s a horrible way to die.”

“You’re growing a conscience now?”

“I’m only contemplating what makes me different than the person who brought me to this condition.”

“Well, the fact that you’re thinking about morality sets you apart from most of the Shade,” Gideon replied softly. “Including me.”

Jacob looked back through the window at the dead drunk man. “Killing him is too quick. Too kind. He needs to suffer and learn from his mistakes. He needs to atone.”

Gideon nodded. “I agree.”

Jacob thought about the right punishment, letting his mind conjure up what would be justified. When he settled on what he wanted, his body turned to mist as he stepped through the glass. He glided over to the man, passed out among numerous empty bottles of booze. Bending down, he whispered into the sleeping man’s ear before blowing softly. The man twitched and in his drunken stupor, batted at his ear. Jacob withdrew, passing back through the glass before solidifying once more.

“What did you say to him?” Gideon asked.

“I told him the next drop of alcohol would burn like poison in his body. I told him he would be haunted by the pain he inflicted on women, especially Ella. I told him he had to atone for all his sins, otherwise, he’d burn in hell.”

“There is no such thing as hell,” Gideon said.

“Hell will be his own mind, trapped in the darkness I’ve set in it.”

They stared at one another and Gideon slowly smiled. “What a truly dastardly thing to do. I love it! You’ll make a great vampire, my friend.”

Jacob returned the smile, and then suddenly, his head was full of screaming voices, all crying out for help. There were too many to control and he had no way of blocking it out. He grabbed his head and bent over.

“Jacob? What’s wrong?”

“There are so many voices,” Jacob muttered. “What do I do about the voices?”

“You said that Eden’s blood helped quiet them?”

“Yes.”

“Then we go back to Eden. Until you learn how to control the voices, you’ll use her blood.”

Jacob looked up at him and gripped his arms. “I don’t want to hurt her.”

“You won’t.”

“Promise me,” Jacob demanded. “You’ll step in if I go too far.”

“I promise,” Gideon vowed.
