Bree

Tears spring in the corners of my eyes. After all this effort, we found my great-grandmother, but she can’t help us—

Elsie’s mouth falls open.

Before I have the chance to scream, rose petals tumble out from between her lips. They tumble down the front of her pink dress, staining it wherever they touch.

In my fingers, Mary and Lottie’s hands hum with a low, steady rhythm.

“I found her.” My voice trembles. Tears tumble from my eyes. “She’s dead. Recently dead. But how can she be recently dead? She died decades ago from a tumor. She can’t die twice, can she?”

“I don’t know, love. In your world, death isn’t always the end,” Mary says. “What else do you see?”

“Nothing. There’s nothing. Well, rose petals are coming out of her mouth. And…” I squint into the water. “She looks as if she’s lying on stone…no, marble. A fancy marble floor, like the one in the ballroom, but not as dusty. And there’s an object beside her head. It’s got white spiky bits, like bones—”

I gasp as a black shadow falls in front of the image, obscuring my great-grandmother.

A pair of red, glowing eyes fix on me.

When you scry, you don’t know who could be looking back.

The Ripper rasps, “Hello, Bree.”
