It was getting close to sunset when Nancy set off to Fiona’s to look after her goat. Nancy was one of those people who could put her hand to anything. She had no arrogance about this; it was merely her view that if something needed to be done, you did it, brushed off your hands, and went on to the next thing. Most people, in her view, dithered unnecessarily. “See it; do it”; that was her motto. She would never have put it this way, but there was a kind of purity in the way she lived her life. It was both uncomplicated and necessary, and it suited her.

As she walked around the back of Fiona’s house she noticed that the door to the barn was open. Nancy frowned to herself. Had she forgotten to close the door? She wasn’t usually careless about such things, but she had been getting rather absentminded lately. She shrugged to herself and went into the barn.

Robert was nowhere to be seen. His stall gate was closed, but Nancy quickly saw that it was unlatched. At first she dared to hope that he might have dug himself into the straw in his stall, but it didn’t take her long to find that he was not there. Beginning to worry, she went out into the yard.
