Chapter 12

Diana

Dore Dore Dore. How could you leave me to deal with this shit? I think to my dead brother as I stomp down a hall and into the backmost living quarters.

I knew the truth would come out; I just didn’t think it would come out so violently. I don’t know what I thought. I just knew I couldn’t tell anyone when I first found the alphas that I worked for Rama so intimately. That I planned things that hurt them. But I had no choice…none at all.

But now? Now I need a godsdamned minute.

I know one thing’s for certain: Rama will not want us to get out of this hellhole prison–no matter what. I obviously brought nothing with me into the maze, but my father didn’t tell Rama everything about the maze’s design either. Only I know every single one of its secrets.

A sudden pang at my shoulder causes me to double over in pain. The fucking vampiri venom. The only thing that can dissipate it is the sulfur baths in Cashore’s primary living quarters, the room I came to. I suppose the good thing about knowing my way around every inch of this maze is that I can help myself more than a normal mark could.

I slip out of Noire’s shirt and the battered, trashed blue dress Rama’s minions outfitted me in, letting the ruined fabric fall to the floor. My entire body is tender. I’ll heal fast because I’m an omega surrounded by alpha males–my body is built to take a beating and be ready for my alpha as quickly as possible. Even so, my ribs and shoulder are tenderized from the naga’s coils and Noire’s various assaults.

Tears slide down my cheeks nonstop as I look out across the enormous blackwater sulfur pool favored by the vampiri. My father designed the maze in some ways to placate the monsters, bringing in little bits of their home provinces as both a mockery and a comfort. Rama wanted them to remember what they lost, but to get complacent in the relative comforts of their quarters.

I step into the sulfur pool and stride across the black sand until I reach the very edge. The pool’s edge drops off into a huge abyss that’s miles deep and nearly half a mile across. At the very far edge, I can barely make out a black stone wall with various outcroppings. More monsters live there, more broken and battered heathens here to put on a show for Rama.

Fuck her.

Snarling, I whip around as the doors to Cashore’s quarters open and shut with a small click.

Jet.

He meets my eyes but says nothing, ripping his clothes off as he hops into the pool with a big splash. I watch him dunk under, washing the blood from his body before swimming toward me and propping his back up against the ledge.

In that moment, he reminds me so much of my brother that my heart feels like it’ll shatter in my chest all over again. If Jet senses what I’m thinking with his alpha intuition, he says nothing.
