Chapter Six

Prisms of light from the toys scattered around the toy box danced across the walls. A plastic slide and colorful miniature basketball hoop sat unused in the corner of the sunroom-turned-play-area.

Adam growled, snatching the stuffed bear from Seri’s hands. She jerked it back and leaned in his face, baring her teeth. In his eyes, she could see a wolf pup staring back at her through her son’s irises. His animal was aggressive, and she knew Adam would shift early. Probably around three or four. It took most shifter children between six to nine years to make the first change. As expected, her son was exceptional.

Adam chuffed and toddled away from her and back to his toy box.

She watched him. The boy was far ahead in terms of wolf behavior, but was not keeping up with his human side. At two, he had yet to speak and stayed to himself without interacting with others.

Roman noticed her son’s behavior, too, and had commented on it more than once. She rested her chin in her palm—if only she knew how his father behaved as a youngster. She’d suspected that Roman wasn’t his father, but as Adam grew, she realized it wasn’t just a notion. Roman was soft, more human than beast. There was no way he could have fathered Adam.

That meant that Adam was Heinrich’s son. At one time she’d hoped to pass the boy off as Kuma or Roar’s son, but the opportunity never really presented itself for her and when it did…the pack trusted Roar’s word over hers.

Seri sat up and dropped the toy beside her chair. Somehow, she needed to get her son a better position among the clans. Roman’s pack was the laughing stock of the shifter nation. There were only two real choices: strengthen Black Mountain pack, or create a situation that would elevate her son somewhere else.

Goddess, but motherhood was giving her a headache.

She rubbed her fingers in a circular motion at her temple. There wasn’t much time to figure things out, Roman would be returning soon from his business trip mentoring that new female Alpha of a coyote band. What was her name…Amelia?

Seri shook her head. That woman had the right idea. Instead of standing behind a man or marrying into a stronger tribe to protect her people, she stepped up and declared herself Alpha.

Seri slammed a fist on the armrest and a deep thud echoed through the sunroom. Adam peered over at her through bright blue eyes and cocked his head. Dark blond locks framed his face and a corner of his mouth lifted in a short snarl.

A tittering, short laugh escaped her. Her son had the face of an angel and—she suspected—the soul of a devil. Hard as she tried to hug him, he would revolt, shoving her away. Adam was not affectionate with her or anyone else.

Well, that wasn’t quite true. The boy was never far from Roman, quietly shadowing the man he thought was his father. She wasn’t sure if her husband noticed, but she had.
