SKIN OF OUR TEETH

Iopen my eyes. My head is cradled in Hannah’s lap. She gazes down at me and a tiny tear slips from the corner of her eye, “Breathtaking.”

The whispering of the witches is a soft susurration in the hall.

I force myself upright, still reeling from the disturbing memories echoing inside my head. An acidic feeling burns in the pit of my stomach. I ignore it. There’s no time for the frightening questions flooding me. I can’t lose focus now.

The witches stare down at me from the gallery. Their silver-haired leader has her hand pressed to her chest in a gesture of astonishment.

I scan my audience. She’s not alone. Several other witches are on their feet, gawking at me with wide eyes and parted lips. I quickly count the number—eight of them with the Sight. Will it be enough?

“Extraordinary,” the silver-haired leader breathes. The awe in her voice resonates through the chamber.

I climb to my feet, gently brushing away Hannah’s attempt to help me, lift my chin, and raise my voice. “Now, you’ve seen that I have the ability to summon the Memories of Power by will. The time is coming when I will be Ready, and it’s coming soon. But there is something you need to know. I love Sam with every fibre of my being. To see him destroyed, without even a fighting chance, will break me beyond repair. I will fall and the cycle of great apocalypses will become never-ending.”

The witches muttering grows louder.

I plunge on. “I know you have no wish to be involved. But the choice before you is simple—help me protect Sam, help us defeat his brother, and the cycle will end. Sam will end it. And if he does not, then I will. I will summon every Memory of Power, every ounce of strength I possess, and I will defeat Lucifer. Fail to help us, and any hope of stopping the cycle dies with Sam.”
