Fifteen

Rochelle awoke in what could only be described as a dungeon. It was cold and damp, and it reeked of some putrid odor she couldn’t quite name. The last thing she remembered was being attacked by the apparition of Elise McNeil.

Rochelle tried lifting her head but was far too weak from blood loss to move, which meant she would also be too weak to use the powers the Elders’ blood had given her so long ago. She couldn’t dematerialize out of this dank place straight to the safety of her home as she should have been able to do.

Still, she tried…and failed. Not even a hint of power broke through.

Her vampiric vision lit up the darkness. At least she had the strength to look around the room. Not that there was much to see.

Stone floors led to stone walls and ceiling. The cell doors would be nothing for her to tear down if she had even a fraction of her strength, but unless she could feed on human blood she would only grow weaker.

Yes, she could survive for years without sustenance, but it would be a slow, agonizing way to die.

Fiery pain shot through her, her veins seizing, shriveling with such little blood left in her body. Unfortunately, there was enough left for her to think and be aware of the excruciating pain scorching through her.

She sucked in short breaths and tuned out the pain to assess her situation as she had trained to do so long ago, that training kicking back in automatically even after all this time.

Elise must have put her here, possibly in the very same dungeon the mortal had perished in two centuries before. If not the same one, then something eerily similar. It would fit the pattern from what Rochelle knew about ghosts.

They always stuck to what was familiar to them.

Unsettled spirits could also have a sick and twisted way of making people pay for perceived wrongs.

Not that Elise hadn’t been wronged on many levels, but the nature of those traumas she'd lived through and the way she’d died, coupled with the time she had spent imprisoned in the dungeon cell as a ghost meant she would have even crueler and more unusual punishments in mind for her targets than others have.

Than even Rochelle’s ghostly tormenter had when he’d come after her so many hundreds of years ago.

Elise’s power was obviously immense. The spirit might even be able to play tricks of the mind on any of them, including Rochelle, though she knew how to fight it. Still, if Elise were strong enough, she may be able to break through Rochelle’s guards.

Rochelle hoped Alex was working with her cousins, her sire, and Laureline to get the spirit under control before it was too late.

Elise probably could have killed Rochelle had she wanted to. The ghost could have taken off Rochelle’s vampiric head, ripped out her immortal heart…

Maybe she hadn’t because she wanted Rochelle alive—yes, most likely to torture her, but Rochelle could survive torture. She’d gone through Enforcer training, which was truly the cruelest and most unusual pain imaginable.
