Chapter Sixteen
What was she doing now? Why had that been the predominant question in her mind since the moment she realized the man whoâd rescued her was none other than her one-time nemesis Owen Patrick Levi?
And why had she remembered his middle name?
Had he left that much of a lasting impression on her? Sheâd dreaded seeing him again. Yet now that she had, it was nowhere near as bad as she had thought it would be. But she still wasnât sure she liked him.
Heâd done so much to keep the hotel running smoothly, pitching in with a calm, reassuring, and experienced manner that had had her staff looking to him for direction as much as they did to her. She wasnât sure how she felt about that. But shouldnât her staff have confidence that the people whoâd bought the hotel actually knew what they were doing in running a hotel? Owen hadnât balked at any point of the evening. Heâd dealt with backed up plumbing, barfing toddler, two extremely ill-mannered service dogs who hadnât liked each other, and a befuddled senior citizen searching for the husband theyâd learned had died in Vietnam, all without losing that reassuring and capable persona.
He was a strong man who knew what he was doing. Nothing like the arrogant boy who hadnât known his rear from a hole in the back garden...
A man she couldnât help but find attractive on so many levels. Crazy. Sheâd gone crazy.
She gulped in some air, the sound loud enough to have him swinging his head in her direction. âYou ok?â
âYes. Just a hiccup.â She meekly followed him down the hallway the best suite. The only suite in the entire hotel that had two private rooms and two private baths. It could be a whole lot worse. He could have had one of the one hundred and twenty rooms that housed double beds. Then what would she have done?
Insisted on doubling up with her brother and letting Mike the security supervisor double with the hotel ownerâs son.
Thatâs probably what she should have done now. But she was just too tired to fight him.
She told him good night then stumbled into the second half of the suite. Her Lost & Found suitcase was leaning against the far wall. She lifted it, surprised to find it empty. She found the clothes folded neatly and placed in the dresser. Martha. Of course the older woman would go the extra mile.
The blankets had been pulled back, and a note rested on the pillow. She immediately recognized Marthaâs distinctive scrawl. Kiddo, take this opportunity to enjoy the yummy gift the good Lord saw fit to provide you. If I were thirty years younger, I would! Love, Martha.
She had no difficulty imagining Martha cackling as she penned the note. Despite the words, though, Greta was not going to be that crazy. Owen was only here for a little while. Once he was gone, how often could she realistically expect to see him again?
The last owner of the hotel had visited one time three years ago.
