âNORMALâ DRINKERS PROTEST TOO MUCH
Many of their âmonths on the wagonâ are aborted attempts to quit completely, in disguise. If they tell people theyâre quitting for good and then fail, everyone will know theyâre hooked. Better to keep their options open. That way they can disguise their failure as success. Hence the smug, âI can go a month without a drinkâ, or âI never have a third drinkâ, or âI never drink spirits/in the week/before sixâ, and so on. When I had an alcohol problem I was too worried about my own drinking to notice that ânormalâ drinkers break their rules as often as they keep them. But why would they need to try and regulate their drinking if they hadnât experienced problems due to alcohol? And why do they need to tell you about it?
They are trying to make themselves feel better about their own alcohol consumption, by making you feel worse about yours.
