CHAPTER 11

Archer told me to meet her in the gardens, but I don’t care to. I’m sitting at my desk in Emery’s and my dorm room. I run a brush full of a radiant-red watercolor paint mixture across a thick textured paper. When I go back in for another line of color, I use pure orange. This piece is dedicated to the fairies with their rainbow Colors. One watches me right now. It’s sitting on one of the drawers I hadn’t pushed in all the way. I think it’s pleased. It keeps making this little fluttering jingle like wind chimes caught in a soft breeze.

I don’t know where Emery is. I’d say she’s with Archer, but if Archer was really expecting me to go to the gardens, I doubt it.

“Believe it or not, Nova, Emery has a life outside of Archer,” I say aloud.

I finish my fairies painting and start another. I make swipes with a loaded lotus pink and then brush it with an equally loaded chartreuse. The Colors bleed into each other, creating a brown very similar to what’s permeated my Color before. I land a stroke of sky blue on the other side of the lotus pink, right on the edge, so those colors bleed together too, creating lavender.

I consider asking for help, but Madeline doesn’t seem to know any more about what’s going on than I do. She knows less.

I push my art away and lay my head down on the desk. The fairy with me uses its butterfly wings to add strength and tugs at the corner of my fairies painting.

“It’s still wet,” I say.

The fairy ignores me, and I don’t bother saying it again as it manages to tug the paper inch by inch off the desk. Another flies through a crack in the wall to help carry it. Since the fairies can’t fit the drawing through the crack, they end up sliding it underneath the door and into the hall. Guess they’re finally taking a break from watching me. It’s not like I’m anywhere near Archer anyway.

I hold out my hand and flex my fingers. I don’t feel so terrible about Mom at the moment. All I can think about is the feeling of Kian’s hand in mine. I didn’t hold it that long, just until we had to separate to change for PE. I want to do it again, though.

A hunger pang has me reaching for my black insulated bottle. I unscrew the cap and drink Kian’s blood as if it’s a totally normal thing to do.

I startle when something scratches at my window. It’s then I notice the shadows obstructing the moonlight from streaming in. Chartreuse blazes through drawn curtains, a pair of blood-red eyes command my attention.

“Hi, Kian,” I say after I open the window.

He nudges me with his strong nose and then points to his back.

“Again?”

He growl-barks.

“Okay, but let me put on my shoes.”

Kian’s chartreuse is strange. It’s settled on too yellow, and the rest of his Color is swirling too fast.
