Chapter Sixteen

I was his backup plan. On a scale of one to totally screwed, we’d just hit porn levels of fucked.

“I’m sorry, Rey.” He paused. “I could diffuse my features and skin to confuse the security cameras, but with how you feel about my kind… Except for entry to the compound, I’m not planning to use my powers.”

“You’re what?” I gaped at him. Going up against a mean, underhanded villain and his hundred henchmen, why would he not use every weapon he had available?

Me. Because I’d asked him to play human for me. He was honoring me, respecting my needs in a way that went beyond anything I’d ever expected or known. But this was ridiculous. Going up against a hundred souped-up vamps as Greyson? That was suicide.

Shame flushed my cheeks, and I sighed. “No, I’m the one who should be sorry. I want to be comfortable with all of you. I should be comfortable with all of you—”

“You suffered an unspeakable tragedy when you were very young. That takes time to heal.” He gently cupped my face, gazing softly into my eyes. He meant every word.

What had I done to deserve this depth of understanding? My heart beat hard, my nose clogging with unshed tears. “I want to heal now, damn it.”

A smile tugged at his lips. “It doesn’t work that way.”

I grimaced. “It’s already been years. You’d think I’d be over it by now.”

“Healing happens at its own pace. I won’t use the powers of my kind,” he repeated.

“Use them if you need to.” I underlined my words with a poked finger to his chest, undermined somewhat when it sank into the impressive valley of his pectorals to the second knuckle. Zajicek had come up with a form-fitting, long-sleeved black T-shirt over deceptively stretchy black jeans and heavy black boots for Elias. I got a navy tank top, blue jeans, running shoes, and a charcoal gray hoodie. Both of us got ultralight, ultrawarm shells, his in black and mine in navy, but Elias had given his to me in the plane.

He nodded solemnly. “All right. Thank you.”

“So.” I got onto my knees and turned around on my seat to bend into the back, rummaging through the weapons Zajicek had provided. “Going to tell me what your plan is to take on a hundred vamps protected by a compound that no doubt bristles with surveillance without using your supervampy powers?”

“I’ll simply use my super thinky powers. Surveillance is only as good as where it’s aimed. Can you get me a crowbar and a sword? You should use the rocket launcher. It’s extra lightweight with recoilless rounds made to fire safely in close quarters. Zajicek orders them special for his wife.”

“Where are the cameras pointed?” I pulled the launcher out, along with a few sheathed knives for myself, then handed him his crowbar and sword.

“The most likely points of entry—the gate and the fence. They’re not expecting an attack from above.”

“You’ll jump over the fence?” The launcher went on my lap as I sat back down.
