Seven

Kane tore out the front doors and raced down the steps as the limo was backing out of the parking space. Though he couldn’t make out the driver’s face through the darkened windows, Kane knew that it was not Brian Kolowski. The limo’s back tires spun on the wet pavement, then squealed as the man floored the accelerator and sped off.

Kane screamed Allison’s name as he raised his gun. He had maybe two seconds before the car would be out of range. Two seconds before Allison would be gone.

He aimed his gun and fired at the back left tire. He missed. Tightening his grip on his gun, he fired again. The tire popped and the car skidded, then crashed into another car that suddenly pulled in front of it. Tony’s car, Kane realized. Though obviously dazed, Tony gave Kane the okay sign and waved him to go on. With his gun still in his hand, Kane ran to the limo and tore open the driver’s door.

The driver’s seat was empty, the passenger door open. Brian Kolowski was tied up on the front-seat floor. “You okay?” he shouted at Allison, who was sitting forward on the back seat, her hand on her temple.

“Yes.” She nodded haltingly. “He went that way—” she pointed to the crowded parking lot “—between those cars.”

Swearing profusely, Kane searched the darkened parking lot. He saw nothing, but he heard the squeal of tires and as he looked in the direction of the sound, he saw the taillights of a white import disappear around the corner.

Dammit! With Tony’s car blocking the limo, there’d be no way he could catch the guy now.

But all that really mattered at this moment, Kane thought as he ran back to the limo, was that Allison was all right.

Still breathing heavily, Kane holstered his gun and opened the back door. Allison was leaning back in the seat, her eyes closed. Ignoring the crowd that was forming behind him, Kane slid in beside her and gathered her trembling body close to him.

“Are you all right?” he asked through ragged breaths.

Dazed, Allison laid her forehead against his chest and clutched the front of his jacket. “Oh sure, just another night out at the ballet,” she said shakily.

Kane smiled with relief. At least she still had enough spunk to be sarcastic. Desperately he wanted to kiss her, to feel her mouth under his and know she was all right, but the most he could allow himself was to pull her closer to him and press his lips lightly to the top of her head.

“Did you get a good look at him?” he asked gently.

She shook her head. “He never really turned around. I just saw his eyes in the rearview mirror. They were terrifying. Dark. Piercing. Ominous.” She shivered and tried to get closer to Kane, but he already had her flush against him.

She felt so small in his arms, so vulnerable. The bastard had almost gotten her, Kane thought. He’d almost succeeded. A murderous rage came over him and he had to close his eyes and draw in a slow, deep breath to ward it off.
