Time felt like it slowed down as I got ready and drove to Finn’s house. I’d let Addie and Jack go on their date. I wouldn’t get in their way. Instead, I’d tell Finn how I felt about his sister and see if I could do anything to fix whatever had pissed him off.

Then … I’d talk to Mia and hope that I was wrong about what she wanted to tell me.

Darkness appeared in the passenger seat and it took all my strength not to try to smash his nonexistent face through the windshield. He didn’t say anything, but he looked pretty pleased with himself.

“Why?” It was the only word I trusted myself to speak.

“You know why I let you watch. As for the rest … I’m helping you. You said I always ruin things and so this time I decided to help.” He smiled, and there was a touch of acid behind it. “You’re welcome.”

“How on earth did this help?” Every word scratched my throat with raw anger.

“You were stuck in between. Even after the fight, Addie might have forgiven you and ditched Jack, and things would have gone back to the way they were. You were hoping that.” He stared at me hard and then gave a little nod. “Now she won’t. No more sitting on the fence. You’re all in or you’re out in the cold. It’s better this way.”

“How is this better and why do you even care?”

“You’re stronger with your friends, but you’re weaker when your secrets keep you trapped in the middle.” His mouth pressed into a firm line. “The less Divided we are when going after the NWS, the better. I’m really not sure about you, but I like surviving.”

I pulled up to the curb in front of Finn’s house, getting more confused by the minute. “First—in case you didn’t notice, we don’t even know where the NWS is, let alone how to go after them. Second—if this is how you do it, please stop trying to help me!”

Turning off the car, I jumped out before he could try to argue any further, but when I stepped out he was right in front of me. Fury drove me forward and I swung at him, knowing it would do no good. I fell back against the car and he crossed his arms over his chest.

“Well, that was stupid.”

I leaned my head back against the car. “All I want in the world is for you to shut up and leave me alone. Just stop all this.”

“It’s good to want things … ” He gave me a lazy grin, positively reveling in my frustration. “But as I was saying, we don’t have to know where the NWS is. We know who the Taker is. All we have to do is ask, and I’m sure he’ll take us to whoever has Dad. We just need to know how to get back out.”

I blinked at the absolute conviction in my own eyes. “You are crazy.”

“If Jack won’t tell us, it’s the only way.
