My brain inside the mummy. Yes. I still had my mind. I could still think like me. I was me without my body.

I was trapped, a prisoner inside these ancient tar-stained rags. But somehow, I was alive. I was still Happy Silverman.

The bandages felt tight around my head. A narrow opening allowed me to see the ceiling. But could I make a sound? Could I speak?

I tried.

And uttered a croak, a choking sound.

And then I found my voice. “Wait!” I cried. “Raman? Are you still here? Wait!”

Silence.

I waited. Waited.

Then I called out again. “Raman?”

I heard footsteps, and then a face peered over the side of the mummy case. My face. My face stared down at me. “What do you want?”

“D-don’t leave me here,” I stammered. “You need me.”

My face blinked. “Need you?” Raman said in my voice. “Why do I need you?”

“Because you don’t know anything,” I said. My mind was spinning. I was thinking fast. “You don’t know the town. You don’t know my class. My friends. You don’t know anyone.”

He gazed down at me. He didn’t reply.

“You don’t know where I live,” I said. “Where will you go at night? Where will you stay? You don’t know what a school bus is. Or a car. Or anything.”

He still didn’t speak.

“You don’t know anything!” I said again. “Everything has changed since you were alive. Listen to me, Raman. It’s like you landed on a different planet.”

“Planet?” he said finally. He scratched my head. “Planet?”

“You need me as a guide,” I told him. “You want to find your amulet? You can’t do it without my help.”

He gazed down at me for another long moment. I could see he was thinking hard. Finally, he nodded. “You promise you will help me if I return you to your body?”

“I promise,” I said. “I’m excited to help a king. An ancient king.”

“I never lived to be ancient,” he murmured. He lowered his eyes sadly. “I was murdered. Then a thief stole my amulet and escaped with it.”

He gripped the side of the mummy case. “But I know where the thief is!” he exclaimed. “He is here.”

“I—I can help you,” I said. “I will search for him with you.”

Was he going to let me out of this mummy and back into my body?

“I will not succeed if the thief knows I have followed him here,” Raman said. “If I return you to your body…if I allow you to help me, you must keep me a secret. You must not let anyone know I am here.”

“I’ll keep your secret,” I said. “I swear.”

I’d swear anything to be released from this mummy!

Please. Please.

If I could have crossed these mummy fingers, I would have had them all crossed.

“You must act as usual,” Raman said. “You cannot give anyone a hint that I am here.”

“I promise,” I said. “No one will be able to guess.”

He thought about it for another moment. Then I felt the vibrations start again, down the entire mummy body.

The room appeared to shake. Red and yellow smears of color clouded my eyes.
