Chapter Nine - Balancing Poles and Glittering Icicles

A chill tickled its way down Gabriela’s back as she looked at the feather. It was the same as the feather she and Zahra found near the big cats’ cages.

“What do you make of it, Gabriela? This isn’t something some bird around here left, now is it? It’s too big, and it feels strange, you know? It’s not soft like a duck’s feather. I’ll bet not even one of those owls we have flying around here at night left it.”

She smoothed the feather with her fingers. “No, I don’t suppose it came from a local bird. I don’t know what it came from. Maybe it came from nothing. Maybe this Monday Boy, whoever he was, left it to try to throw us off him for starting that fire. I’ll take it over to Zahra, perhaps she can sort it out.”

“Did I hear my name mentioned? What is it I’m supposed to sort out? Oh, Vinnie, before I forget, Arthur is looking for you. He’s over at the Big Top.” Zahra smiled at the big man. He turned red, stammered, “Thanks, Za…Zahra, I’ll ju…just be going along now.” He practically ran down the Midway.

Gabriela laughed. “Oh, Zahra, you are so bad. You know Vinnie has the crush on you. Why do you not like him in return?’

Zahra’s face was sober. “It’s not that I don’t like him, you know, like that, but…”

“But what? You think it would be a bad thing? Vinnie is a very nice man, yes?”

Zahra shrugged. “Yes, he is very nice. But it’s just that I’m the Tattooed Woman, I’m part of the freaks. He is too nice to be saddled with that. Look, I don’t want to talk about Vinnie right now. Besides, you have something I am supposed to sort out. What is it?”

“Let’s go back to your trailer where we can talk. I have something to show you. Something very disturbing.”
