A Heavy Mars Sample Return Mission . The vehicles are the same as intended for the human mission but there is no crew aboard. It functions as a final rehearsal, testing all the systems in their intended operating conditions. The scientific objective is several hundred kilograms of samples from Mars. In this launch opportunity , some material starts to be left on Mars and construction is started.
Mission 1 sees the first human contact with Mars. This is a short stay mission with a small crew of perhaps three astronauts. Little actual work is undertaken on the planet, but all of the systems are tested in actual conditions and the reactions of the crew are tested without requiring them to commit to a lengthy stay on the surface.
