Deliberate Practice
If your goal entails becoming excellent at something, then deliberate practice may be a great tool for you. This is the process by which professional athletes become the best they are able; the way physicians become excellent in their field; and how other professionals, musicians, mechanics, administrative assistants, retail clerks, programmers, small businesspeople, and others rise to the top of their game. Your motivation for this had better be strong, however, because deliberate practice is hard work. Much more than the simple adage âpractice makes perfect,â deliberate practice is a well-researched and effective way to become excellent. This is the process that can raise a hard worker with modest talent to a higher level than a more talented but lazy coworker. This is a great example of living intentionally.
The core tenants of deliberate practice include the following:
Motivation is important. How does this tie to your values and vision for your life? Do you have the time, resources, and energy right now? How will you feel when you achieve expert status?
It is an effort focused on improving performance. The effort stretches you to exceed current performance.
The effort will break you out of your comfort zone as you build from a level of incompetence to competence and back to incompetence at the next step and repeat.
