Greenwich Village: The Big Back Lot
Greenwich Village is New York City on a different scale. It is low-rise; there are lots of trees; people live in houses; you can see the sky. Needless to say, with so much going for it visually, the Village has been one of the most photographed areas of the city. This is especially true nowadays, with the resurgence of filmmaking in New York, and on practically any given day you can find a movie, television series, or commercial being shot somewhere in the Village. Quite simply, the Village is New York City’s back lot—and in this chapter, movie lovers will discover many of the same Greenwich Village addresses found in directors’ and location managers’ notebooks—including such television classics as the Friends apartment building, The Cosby Show townhouse, and the NYPD Blue precinct.
Besides location-spotting, movie lovers who visit the Village will also find avant-garde cinemas, clubs, and cabarets that provided employment (both on- and offstage) to future stars during the dues-paying periods of their careers, even a secret sidewalk that has the footprints of legendary movie stars like Joan Crawford and Gloria Swanson.
