CHAPTER NINE

“WHISTLING WHILE WE WORK, are we?”

Avery looked up from the supplies cart she’d been reloading and grinned at her colleague Valentina, who was doing the same. “It makes the day go quicker.”

Valentina raised an approving eyebrow. “I’m guessing that means there is something or someone worth going home to these days?”

“Something,” Avery enunciated even though she was pretty sure her and Carter’s efforts to keep a cap on their attraction to one another was not quite as successful as it had been a week ago.

“I got Five Acre Farm.”

Valentina’s face lit up. “Oh, honey. I know you had your eye on that place for a while.” Her expression shifted to one of concern. “You sure you’re going to be all right in that house on your own?”

Avery nodded. “I’ll be fine.” And somehow, even though she had no idea what the future had in store, she believed she would be.

Even though they weren’t technically buying Five Acre Farm together, they had agreed that Carter would act as her foreman. His offer to pound in nails and patch up leaks had been kind, but the man had a day job here at the hospital. Saving lives trumped caulking window frames. Even though the idea of watching him wander around her house half naked with a tool belt slung around his hips delighted, she knew she’d have to hire a crew. She didn’t know a lug wrench from a spanner, so...after pulling off an incredible bargaining session with the realtor, Carter had agreed to help her hire people. All of which had given her the confidence she needed to put her signature on the house deed, knowing her sister’s would never be beside it. Though Carter’s wasn’t there, either, it was in a way. He had her back. And it felt good.

And...she wasn’t gonna lie...it felt nice having Carter physically wrapped around her actual back, as well. She’d been on nights for the past week so they hadn’t seen much of one another, but they’d managed to tweak their schedules so that they would spend their first night in the house together tomorrow night when the keys would be hers.

Rather than going cheap and cheerful, as she’d planned, she’d splurged on two items. One, a lilac-colored chesterfield chaise lounge she’d seen in a vintage furniture shop and two, the item she was still a bit nervous might not make it up the stairs to her bedroom, a massive sleigh bed made out of Tennessee hickory. It was gorgeous. Big enough for two to sprawl on and with a mattress robust enough to endure a fair amount of bouncing. She knew because Carter had convinced the salesman to let them have a go. Bouncing. Not banging. Although...she was pretty sure there would be some of the latter come nightfall.

“Oh! So we’re humming, too.” Valentina’s smile gave away the fact she wasn’t disapproving. “Does that mean we can look forward to hearing you sing at this year’s benefit? We missed you the last couple of years.
