Chapter 14

Ren

Mathis is out-out.

He’s got me close to his side, buried under one arm. I’ve waited long enough.

Despite the ache in my core and in my lower belly, I pause, only hearing his rumbling snores turn to softer, deeper ones. He’s basically comatose. Crazy-good sex will do that to you, but as tired as I am, my focus is on getting the fuck out of here in one piece. Self-preservation is the name of the game.

So, I’ve stayed put, with his arm draped over me. Waiting for his knot to settle and for his cock to slip out of me. Listening despite the headache and the growling in my stomach. Waited until the sunrise started to peek through the mouth of the cave.

I’m too afraid to risk the wild at night again, but maybe with some light, I’ll have a better chance. Whatever it takes to get the Moonstone out of here and make it to the shrine in one piece.

Peeking over at Mathis again, I find him still sleeping soundly. The Moonstone glows softly in the dim light of the cave, just a few steps away, a constant reminder of the danger I’m in and the lack of time I have to get to the temple. It’s right there next to the sleeping wolf who acted like he had all the time in the world, and the confidence to get the Moonstone back from me. A tight smile tugs at my lips.

Too bad for him he’s about to wake up alone.

Now’s my chance to make my escape attempt. Maybe my only chance. I need to get out before the alpha wakes up and decides he’s in the mood for punishment as well as pussy.

Who knows what he’ll do to me if I stay. Or if he catches me again.

I scowl at the Moonstone. He won’t; it’s as simple as that.

A shiver jumps across my skin, of both fear and anticipation. Which confuses the hell out of me. What is it with these wolves that make my girlie bits override my common sense? I don’t fucking get it. I probably never will, and if I stop to think about it, I’ll go right off the deep end into crazy town and never come back.

Get a move on, Ren! My inner voice is screaming at me, and I know she’s right. It’s time to move.

Holding my breath, I take Mathis’s hand and lift it just enough for me to wiggle myself out. It’s heavier than I expect. He grunts, shifting slightly. I freeze and stare at him. Another inch and then, when I get myself free, it drops, causing him to snort and turn on the makeshift bed of animal furs. Dax’s bed, if he’s to be believed. We just fucked in Dax’s cave like a couple of animals.

God, it’d been so long since I had real good sex…

I freeze with my heart in my throat, but when he doesn’t move again, I bend down, grab the Moonstone, and slip out of the cave, every part of me alive and on fire.
