In the weeks prior to Christmas break, Andrew joined Ben at lunch following an apology he delivered on Garret’s behalf. Andrew didn’t believe for a second that Garret wanted to speak to him, let alone apologize, but he accepted it from Ben nonetheless. When asked if he found another individual to film the movie for him, Ben mumbled something incoherent and dodged the question by changing the topic of discussion to Andrew’s work on the school paper. The manner in which he questioned him was not as friendly as it had once been, which came as little surprise to Andrew.

The arrival of Christmas marked a turning point for Andrew, and while he didn’t care much for the holiday before then, his point of view changed when he had the excuse to give Kevin the gift he had been waiting a month to give him. That morning, he scrambled out of bed and dressed, then grabbed his guitar, a pick, and mini amplifier. His fingers itched to play that tune, to have Kevin hear it, and soon he would.

When he came down the stairs, he smelled crisp, fresh breakfast. Kevin was already awake, and had been spending a good deal of time in the kitchen making a mountain of waffles for them. He then sat upon a dining room chair, facing the kitchen where Kevin toiled away, pulling the strap of his guitar around his neck and resting the instrument in his lap. Then, he strummed the low E string, and the dining area filled with the bellowing echo of a rumbling twang. Kevin leapt nearly a mile into the air and spun around to check the source of the noise. After planting a relieved hand over his chest, they laughed in unison.

Kevin stepped away from the counter and entered the dining room toward Andrew, pocketing his hands. “What’s this?” he asked, both curious and joyful, taking a seat in one of the chairs at the table beside him.

“Your present.” Andrew began to play, his skilled fingers sliding over each string. The chords started in minor keys, a sad melody that carried into one much sunnier as the chorus arrived.

Andrew sang more than just a song to Kevin. He told him a story. In this tale, he had gone back to his younger self, and had told him to hold out a little longer, to endure the pain, because something good would happen to him if he waited. He would meet
