Some individuals may wish to initiate contact with the Other Side on their own. This may be possible, because each of us is capable of having a mediumistic experience. It can be frustrating, however, since not everyone is able to carry on coherent communication with a discarnate intelligence. That is why some people use a Ouija board or another device to assist in their attempts to connect with the Other Side.

I am often asked if Ouija boards are evil. In and of themselves, Ouija boards are not evil. They are pieces of wood— inanimate objects. By analogy, a loaded gun is also an inanimate object. A gun is not evil, yet anyone who would give a loaded gun to a young child is obviously not acting with the best intentions and is certainly not comprehending the potential repercussions.

It is the intention of the person using the device and how it is used that determine if it will be a conduit for negative energy. Often purchased in toy stores and therefore perceived as a novelty, a Ouija board might be used by a gathering of people who have a few glasses of wine and play with it: “Let’s see who we can conjure up!” No protective prayers are said; no one invokes the guidance of God’s white light. This illustrates how a Ouija board might be used for less than the highest of purposes.

When there is no logic or intelligence associated with the activity, you may get negative results. Legitimate mediums understand the difference between spirit contact and the manipulation of the subconscious mind. Mediumship is different from the power of the mind, which can manipulate the Ouija board. Mediums know when messages are from spirits and not merely part of a parlor game.

Spirit contact is not entertainment and should never be treated as such. It is a serious activity and should be approached with dignity, love, and respect. Drinking alcohol and laughing over a board game will not necessarily attract positive spiritual energies. By analogy, it is like throwing a cast net into the spirit world and hoping to catch Flipper—but catching Jaws instead. Do not voluntarily engage in spirit contact unless you are properly prepared and protected.

A legitimate medium possesses the natural skills for spirit contact and will not require something like a Ouija board to open the door to the Other Side. They themselves do not conjure up or summon any particular spirit or spirits. A loved one on the Other Side who needs to communicate with someone here will do so. The client is the one that “brings” a spirit to the reading, not the medium. The medium is the conduit.

Trust in God’s guidance is essential. When a spirit communicates information, which the medium translates as symbols or images, one must believe in its significance. What may be thought of as an irrelevant detail may be an extremely important message or piece of validation from a spirit. Spirits are not wrong. What may be inaccurate is the
