And the Oscar Goes To…

Malcolm

“I can’t take it anymore,” Kat wails, throwing herself into Maddox’s arms the minute he opens the door.

“Uh… Hi, Kat,” he says, awkwardly patting her back while shooting worried glances at Alice who’s watching from a few feet back, her lip curling with disdain.

It’s funny. Now that I know she’s the one trolling Kat, it seems obvious how much she hates her. I can’t believe I didn’t notice it before.

I wave to Alice. “Hey. She’s been kind of freaking out all morning. I didn’t want her going anywhere alone. Is it okay if we come in for a minute?”

She wants to say no. I can see it, hovering there just on the tip of her tongue, but she’s not going to push us out when Kat’s so upset. Not because she cares, obviously, but because she’s still pretending to be Kat’s friend. I’m trying not to let it get to me, but it’s so messed up. All this time, this girl’s pretended to be Kat’s friend and it’s been a big fat lie. Alice plasters on a fake smile and says, “Of course. Come in.”

“Whaaa!” Kat cries and now she’s thrown herself at Alice. “Why does everyone hate me?” she says. The woman is a shit actress, like seriously over-the-top bad, but if the couple’s caught on to her act, at least they’re not calling her out on it. She’s making wet sniffling sounds while rubbing her face on Alice’s shoulders. I almost feel bad for Alice. She’s stiff as a board, has her head turned and her face scrunched up, basically doing everything in her power to stay clear of the bodily fluids Kat’s spewing. Meanwhile, Kat moves on from sniffling to hacking into the other girl’s shoulder. She’s having way too much fun with this.

I tear my attention away from the soap opera playing out in this guy’s foyer to ask Maddox, “Can we sit down?”

“Oh. Yeah. Sure.” The guy’s so hyped up he’s practically hopping as he leads us into the living room. Kat’s still whining and hanging from Alice’s neck like a baby sloth. “You want a drink?” he says.

“I’m good. Thanks.”

I think he was hoping I’d say yes just to give him something to do because he’s got the wide-eyed stare of a trapped rabbit as he takes a seat on the leather sofa beside his girlfriend and Kat. The house is small but nice and clean. It’s obvious the guy lives with his mother because no way he picked out those flowery curtains or put up the five billion pictures of himself that dot the walls. I’m especially enjoying the one of him peeing when he was around three. No wonder Kat gives him so much crap. The guy’s a walking punchline.

Alice and Maddox share a look over Kat’s shoulder as she continues to wail a bunch of nonsense, but their attention turns laser-focused on her when she finally says, “You should take over the band, Alice.” Just like that, the couple is suddenly all attentive and thoughtful.
