* * * *

Jordan stared at his reflection in the mirror. He was wearing jeans and a nice shirt, but he felt like it might not be enough. He didn’t have to impress Nestor—he was pretty sure Nestor would want to be with him even if he wore a garbage bag over his head—but he still wanted to look nice.

He’d been incredulous when he’d gotten Nestor’s text that Nestor wanted to go on a date. He still didn’t know what it meant, but it was a step he hadn’t expected Nestor to take, and he was excited yet, at the same time, worried. He couldn’t help but wonder what would happen if Nestor disliked what he had planned.

It was a bit stupid, but he was excited to show Nestor what he had in mind. He’d thought about it instantly when Nestor had said he wasn’t sure what he wanted to do. It was true he was new in town, and as far as Jordan knew, this was the first date he’d be going on in Green Hill.

He hoped it wouldn’t be the last one.

He wanted to take Nestor on countless dates and get to know him so well they could finish each other’s sentences. He wanted them to grow up together, and even though the thought terrified him, to eventually bond and have a family. He could see all of that happening, but he’d have to be careful not to send Nestor running. He partly understood why Nestor was so afraid to open up to him, yet at the same time, he wasn’t sure how to deal with it.

He supposed that was what the date would be for. They could talk, smooth things out between them, and decide what their next step should be. Nestor might not be ready for anyone else to know they were mates, but they could at least talk about it, and he could explain better. He had to have good reasons not to tell his brother about this, but Jordan didn’t want to assume without talking to his mate.

A knock on his bedroom door made him look back. His father stood there, peering at him with interest. Jordan waved at him to come in.

“How do I look?” he asked. It would probably be better for him to ask Simon’s mom, but this was a moment between him and his father.

“Are you going out?” his father asked, looking him up and down.

“I have a date.”

His father looked curious. “Do I know the young man you’re going out with?”

Jordan knew how lucky he was that his father had accepted the fact that he was gay without hesitation. It had never changed anything between them, and it never would. His father accepted him for who he was, something Nestor’s parents couldn’t do.

“He arrived in town just a few weeks ago. You know Jude, my boss? Nestor is his brother.”

Jordan’s father’s eyes lit up. “I think I saw your date at the store. Is he a nice-looking man with blond curls? Very tall?”

Jordan grinned.
