“Ihave to talk to Clancy.”

That was all Nox would say during the forty-five minute drive back to Georgetown. He chewed on his nails, mumbling names and dates, shaking his head and saying “she” had to be wrong.

“Why do I know the name Cathal O’Casey?” Nox asked when they strode into the study and Merlin spun away from the board. Clancy was seated behind Nox’s desk and looked up from his laptop, frowning as Merlin let out a belligerent snort.

“Cathal O’Casey? Please don’t tell me he’s somehow involved.” he sneered and Clancy humphed in agreement.

“The man was a dangerous charlatan,” Clancy said and went back to typing.

“He was, indeed,” Merlin said. “Tried to pass himself off as a…magickal Manson and was building himself a little family in the country out by Worlds End in the 60s. But there were whispers of dark rituals and there had been some squabbling about the number of wives Cathal had taken.”

That got a chuckle out of Clancy. “Too many wives has been the downfall of many cults and kings throughout the ages.”

Nox nodded in agreement. “Speaking of, did you, by any chance, have sex with Sheila Forsythe in the late 80s?” he asked, making Clancy jump and splutter as he reared back.

He shook his head, looking offended. “I didn’t have sex with anyone in the 80s.”

Merlin hummed knowingly. “I cannot tell you how many times I wish he had gotten laid. An unbearable decade, let me tell you.”

Nox’s lips twisted as he considered what he had learned at Sheila’s, then gasped when he remembered the pictures. “What about these?” He got out his phone and quickly tapped at the screen until he found the pictures of Clancy and Sheila.

Clancy snatched the phone and stared for a moment, then let out a startled “Oh!” He gave Nox a loaded look. “I do know who that is but I did not have sex with that woman. She was an assistant to one of the other professors when I taught at Princeton and went by Patrick Darby. But I barely knew her. I don’t think I even knew her name at the time.”

“This is Walt’s mom, Clance! She knows that you changed names and moved to Georgetown so no one would notice that you weren’t aging.”

“She was Walt’s mom…” Clancy stared at the picture, shaking his head at the photo. “It was time for me to move on but I thought I was leaving before matters got out of hand. But I didn’t pay any attention to her. I didn’t want to encourage her in any way. You know how some students and assistants get, Nox. They take everything you say too seriously and too literally and they start turning up in places they shouldn’t.”

“Like stalkers?” Nox suggested and Clancy hissed as he shrugged.

“I didn’t think she had reached that point. I never gave her any encouragement and I thought I had disappeared from her orbit before she could become fixated.”
