one of them demanded.

“We, uh …” Abby began. “Our uncle is, um …”

She looked down the hall in the direction Buzz had run. He’d ducked into an office and was safely out of sight.

The guard stuck out his open hand. “Let’s see your visitor passes.”

“I dropped mine,” Doc said. “Can I have a new one?”

“Me too,” Abby said.

“Come with us,” the man ordered.

In the lunar module, Nat Love coiled up his rope and tossed it over his shoulder. It was bad enough for a cowboy to be without his horse. He couldn’t stand to be without the rope, too.

Then he backed down the ladder.

“Whoops!” he said. “I just locked us out.”

“Please repeat, Buzz,” Charles Duke said from Houston. “Locked out of what?”

“The door to the lunar thing,” Nat said. “Who’s got the key?”

Neil Armstrong spun around. The Eagle’s hatch was open. There was no lock on the outside, anyway.

“Very funny, Buzz,” Neil said.

“Hilarious,” said Duke. “Let’s get to work, fellas.”

Nat jumped to the ground and gaped at the lunar landscape. The dusty gray surface was dotted with rocks and craters, and it stretched to the horizon under an ink-black sky. It was beautiful, in a way. Kind of like a desert drained of color.
