Public Hearings
Cultural resource managers may serve as expert witnesses or otherwise participate in public hearings. In these circumstances, the relationship building that takes place in other contexts is addressed by careful planning regarding what information you convey and how you convey it. If you have prepared carefully, you have a clear idea of who the stakeholders are and what their particular goals are. Be sure that your approach to presenting information in this context takes those goals into account.
As for any public speaking engagement, whether a university lecture or stand-up comedy routine, your success as an expert witness depends, in part, on the extent to which the audience identifies with you. Playing the role of the scholar or scientist may appeal to you but may make you appear out of touch with the general public. It is best to select examples that the audience can relate to and avoid specialized language that others may find unfamiliar.22 Attending to these details in planning your presentation amounts to relationship building in this context. As in other contexts, carefully considering the stakeholdersâ and counterpartsâ goals and co-opting them whenever possible will help you better present your position in ways that they are likely to accept.
