To my dear children

My dear children,

Sometimes when you race past me, I have to sit on my hands to stop myself reaching out and grabbing you and pulling you into my chest.

You’re growing so fast, you turn your head just so and I see you at 17, 23, 42.

When I say to you: ‘Do you know how much I love you?’ and you sigh and say, ‘Yes, Mum!’, you don’t understand how important it is to me that you know that there’s not a second when I don’t love you. I love you so much it aches, it fills my bones, it lives in all of my marrow. Every part of me is you. I love you so much it echoes in every decision I make for you, everything I do for you.

You’re my everything.

I love you so much that I want to hold you forever and carry you always. I love you so much that I could say I love you so much a thousand times a day, I could fill every waking moment with I love you and it would never be enough.

I adore you. I love you in a way that I’ve never known before.

There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for you.

Except this one thing.

I love you so much, but I cannot.

Please. I cannot.

I cannot look at your Minecraft village again and pretend to care about the new bricks you got. Please, I cannot look at your dog Jane. That died. And that you memorialised with a sign that said RIP Jane. Please I cannot grieve your Minecraft dog.

I am sorry, but I do not care about your village. I do not want to see what that egg hatches into, my beautiful child who owns my heart.

I cannot breathe without you, but I promise you I do not want to see your Minecraft fish. Please. Every step you take I want to make easier; I want to take your life’s journey with you; but I do not need to know what Creative Mode is.

I know that Cooper’s mum plays Minecraft with him, but my beautiful angel, darling heart, she is just a better mum than me. Good for Cooper, but sorry, you’ve got me.

My life now? I cannot imagine it without you. I cannot count the ways you make my life better, but I could die not knowing about the difference between the stones you used for your barn and the stones you used for the staircase under your house on Minecraft and, I promise you, I’d be OK.

I am so happy that you are happy, my sweet boy, but your Minecraft skin can be your secret that you do not have to share with me.

You’re playing in Classic Mode? OK, please know that when I carried you in my tummy, I talked to you every night and I knew you before I knew you and there’s never a time that I want to hear about this edition of Minecraft.

My love for you is so boundless that I
