Chapter Thirteen

Eris

Oz and I walked in silence for I didn’t know how many miles. The events of the day before were unbelievable, no matter how many times I ran them over and over in my mind. Oz held my hand more tightly than ever, and even with the pummeling of the wind, I could hear his heart beating fiercely in his chest.

“It’s going to be okay,” I whispered, not able to take the silence anymore.

He took a long, deep breath but continued to look ahead. “I don’t know what I would do if I lost you.”

I nodded. The fact was, even though he’d only been in my life a short time, I didn’t know how I would go on without my mate, either. I wasn’t a fool to think that I couldn’t go on, but my heart would be shattered, and my wolf would never be the same.

“Those people were nuts!” I exclaimed, trying to lighten the mood. “Did they really think you were going to trade me for a peach tree and some jerky?” I laughed, but Oz didn’t immediately.

“They could’ve at least given me a peach tree and an apple tree. It was a pathetic offer. One more fruit tree, and you were theirs.”

My heart dropped all the way down to my toes. I swallowed and cleared my throat, trying to choke back the tears. Then my heart kicked in, telling me the truth.

He had to be joking. I took a chance and looked up at him, seeing a small smile play at his full lips.

This was not the time to joke around, but I would play along.

“Really? That’s it? I’m worth two apples trees at least. Ridiculous.”

He laughed but covered his mouth. Despite being safe from the weird pack that wanted me for their own, we were still being followed.

I knew it.

He knew it.

And the fact never left our thoughts.

“I could be traveling home with my three fruit trees, happy as could be.” He sighed and winked at me.

“Okay, that’s quite enough,” I said and nudged him in the ribs with my elbow. “You know you love me.”

Gosh, I’d said it out loud. Yes, he was my mate, and I was solid in the fact that he was meant for me and I for him, but there was something about saying the four-letter word that was scary.

Which was ridiculous, since he’d basically pledged his life to me.

Silence once again hung between us before his face grew serious. “There isn’t enough gold or silver or anything else in this world of more value to me than you. You know that right? I wouldn’t trade you for anything. Ever.” He pulled me under his arm. “We have even more company. Let’s move a little faster,” Oz whispered but nuzzled my neck to cover it.

We sped up, as much as we could. The hot sun drained us of more energy than we had to expend and at this point, even with the meal and the good night’s rest, we were running on love and hope alone.
