A PB4Y Privateer cruises over Ault Field in 1946. This photograph, taken by Ens. Malcolm Barker, a navigator in VPB-120, shows Ault Field as it looked for its first 10 years. The diagonal strip of concrete adjacent to the taxiway at left center was used for sighting-in and testing machine guns—aircraft would be tied down and fire their guns into a backstop at the end of the strip. (Malcolm Barker.)

Doris Barker, wife of Ens. Malcolm Barker, smiles for the camera in 1946 from the hilltop housing overlooking Ault Field. With World War II over and the Korean War yet to come, life at NAS Whidbey in those interwar years was relatively calm and pleasant. The land at the bottom of the hill was later acquired by the Navy. (Malcolm Barker.)
