This map shows the runway configurations for the airfield at NAS Jacksonville and the seaplane runway configurations in the St. Johns River in 1941. The seaplane landing and takeoff areas were delineated by marker lights in the St. Johns River. In a Florida Times-Union newspaper article in 1942, the base security officer warns the citizens of Jacksonville that continued theft of the seaplane marker lights would result in criminal prosecution. On June 9, 2009, the NAS Jacksonville main runway 09/27 was redesignated 10/28 due to magnetic variation over the past 69 years. This marked the first change since those runways were originally designated. Today, runway 1/19 is only used as a taxiway down to the combat-aircraft loading area, while runway 5/23 is no longer used at all. Runway 13/31 (now 14/32) has a displaced threshold, meaning its length has been considerably shortened.
