Driver: Electric Motor

In case electricity was available at the location an electric motor (below) is often the preferred choice as a prime mover.

When installing electric motors as drivers it must be taken into consideration that additional investments for supplying electricity (e.g. along a pipeline) might be required. These costs could be substantial for pipelines passing through remote locations or field operations in remote areas. During gas field operations electricity often becomes available only when produced in the field by a gas turbine or -engine linked to a generator. In these cases, a driver using natural gas from the gas field itself creates substantial advantages, especially if associated gas would otherwise have to be flared.

If electricity could be supplied conveniently to the site, electric motors are often the driver of choice in connection with centrifugal compressors. The following image shows a centrifugal compressor (in the front) driven by an electric motor (in the back of the picture).
