CONVERSATION
Your ability to skillfully engage in a conversation will not only enhance your interpersonal effectiveness, it will determine to a large extent the quality of your relationships. And in doing so, the quality of your social, professional, and personal life.
Let’s define conversation as any face-to-face verbal interaction between two people. A brief exchange between two strangers standing in line at the market, a problem-solving session between two coworkers, and a long discussion about honeymoon plans between two lovers are all examples of conversations.
There are many other kinds of interactions between two individuals via cell phone, text messaging, email, Skype, and even old-fashioned snail mail, but we will focus most of our attention on face-to-face, in the flesh, everyday conversations.
Every day you engage in numerous conversations, ranging from brief 10-second exchanges in the neighborhood or between classes to lengthy talks with friends and family at work and at home.
Without conversation, your life would lack much of its richness and significance. In fact, without a basic ability and willingness to interact verbally with others in your life, you wouldn’t have much of a life at all.
Some of the most hopeless and depressed people in the world are those who cannot or will not attempt to build bridges to others through conversation. They reject the invitations from others to talk. Or they bore others by only talking about themselves. Or they cast about so much negative judgment and gloom that people run from their approach.
They are so many ways to erect barriers in our interpersonal communication, when deepest in our hearts is the desire to make a connection with another human being. To cross that bridge to another person. To reach that region of the heart of another. To stand on common ground with another, if only for a few moments. Perhaps that is why we were created. To connect, share, and cherish others.
