CHAPTER 11

Was she in love with Nash? That would be crazy. No one fell in love in hours. Did they? And did he say he was in love with her? More crazy. But she felt something for this man deep in her gut, an ache of some kind. She could almost fist her hand and rub her knuckles into the dull pain there. She would have laughed at the idea a week ago, if anyone had said it to her. Falling in love instantly was bound for disaster. They would never make it as a long-term couple if they started spouting words of love in a blizzard. Yet, she wanted to say it and find out how the words felt on her tongue. Would they be soft and cold like a snowflake? Or hot like spicy food?

“Nash…” The house came into view, stopping the powerful words in her mouth.

The house wasn’t as large as hers, but that was probably for the better. It was built to look like a cabin, but was made with fabricated wood. They approached the back with its deck off the kitchen and family room. She knew the layout from being invited over for summer barbeques. She had only attended once or twice, always begging off with excuses of work. She had worked. Worked herself stupid and lost her company anyway. She wasn’t sure if her story was a tragedy or a farce.

“We found it. Holy shit. I was starting to think we weren’t going to, and I was trying to decide on the best and easiest kind of shelter to build for us.” Nash’s smile lit up his face. His dark eyes brimmed with joy, creasing the skin around them.

Any of the earlier stress was gone for him. He had handled that mountain lion with stealth. She had fallen apart and until he had mentioned words of possible love for her, her body had continued to tremble and hum from the fright.

The trembling returned. The windows of the house were dark, as she knew they would be. Coming here had been a long shot. A gamble. And now she had to show her hand.

“My neighbors aren’t here.”

“What do you mean?” His brows dipped, creasing the skin between them.

“They don’t live here during the winter. The spend winters in Arizona.” She braced herself for his reaction.

“No one lives there?” She had expected him to raise his voice and yell. Instead, he had kept his voice level and calm. If he felt angry inside, he didn’t show it.

“I’m afraid not until May. I don’t know if they have a generator either. I’m hoping they have power and we can break into their house and set off the alarm, bringing the police.”

“You do realize no car or truck is getting up this mountain during this storm? That alarm could blare for days, and we’ll be the only ones who hear it.”

“It was a risk.”

“A stupid one. I can’t believe you didn’t think to tell me this before. You
