Y. Cho et al. tested the sensitivity of MoS2 films covered with Au nanoparticles to ambient gas, such as N2, H2/N2, and O2 (Cho et al. 2016). Although current versus voltage measurements on MoS2 pure and functionalized with nanoparticles are distinct, no significant change in the electrical resistance under exposure of the three gases was observed. According to the authors, charges transferred from the gas may be insufficient to induce a measurable resistance change or may be trapped in defect states. S.-Y. Cho et al. enhanced the performance in volatile organic compound sensing with MoS2 devices functionalized with Au nanoparticles (Cho et al. 2017). The devices responded to different volatile organic compounds at 1000 ppm, such as acetone, acetaldehyde, ethanol, hexane, and toluene. The Au nanoparticles on MoS2 induced n-doping effects, significantly modifying its response. In conclusion, gas selectivity is still a problem, and further studies are required to address this limitation in sensors made with two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide materials functionalized with metallic nanoparticles.
