Chapter Nineteen

Acceptance

“You don’t need to lie with me tonight if you aren’t ready.” Drake’s voice sounded gentle and kind.

But… I think I want to. What would his body feel like against mine?

A shiver traveled down her spine, ending at the sweet spot between her legs. She wanted him, but she also needed to follow the rules after disgracing her pack. The Alpha stated she must bond with Drake. To properly bond, they would need to lie together. He explained sometimes the process of lying with a wolf would end in intimacy, but it wasn’t always a fact or a necessity. Mated wolves could simply sleep next to one another. The act consecrated the relationship and made it known to all others, which was why most wolves lie together within the first few days of being mated. Afterward, no other wolf would approach your mate, and vice versa.

Nala had never been physical with James. Would lying with Drake lead to…other things?

Lying with your mate was special which was the reason why Nala did not want Drake to lie with Alma to ensure her transformation. Although they had not been intimate, he held her close, providing warmth and comfort. Nala wanted to lie with Drake. If she compartmentalized all her fears and worries, the desire was there. An ache formed in her lower belly, a desire she could not explain. Lying with Drake would ensure she accepted the relationship—one she wanted but wasn’t ready for. Yet, the Alpha had given a command. She had disgraced her pack, and she needed to show them she was willing to complete her duties. The Alpha could have easily removed her from the pack, which would have been beneficial for him since the expectation would be for her to challenge for leadership one day. Yet, with grace, he gave her another chance to prove herself. So, she would.

“We will lie together tonight.” Butterflies surrounded her heart, her insides aching with need.

Drake smiled and nodded.

Even though she did not want another serious relationship at this exact moment, she wanted more kissing.

Drake grabbed her hand, and they strolled toward the pack. This would prove to the pack that they were a couple.

And maybe…he just wants to be close to me.

She could not be sure of his motives, but she enjoyed his touch. The Alpha’s face brightened upon seeing them.

“It’s nice to see you both together.” The Alpha’s face softened, a small smile appearing on his face.

Nala recognized the glaring stares of her pack-mates. Crinkled eyes, scowls, shaking heads. How could she ever make this right?

“Nala and I will lie together tonight.” Drake pulled on her hand to get her attention. So, she refocused.

“Yes, we will.”

Did that sound convincing enough?

“This is the first piece of good news I have had today. Unfortunately, it’s also where the good news ends. I’m about to make an announcement. Please gather around.”

The conversations stopped.

This announcement would be about the hunters, which would only fuel the pack’s anger toward her. Unfortunately, she couldn’t change anything.
