Sofia squinted through the fading light. A sweet little face framed by loose brown curls stared out at her from the worn picture. A nice family, Sofia thought. What would happen to her own family when her dad moved out? She wished she knew the answers. She wished she knew how to fix things.

They rounded the last corner to the lodge. Sofia looked back at the rainforest as the darkness closed in. It seemed like darkness was closing in everywhere in her life right now.

“Muito, muito obrigada,” Sofia said politely. “Thank you very, very much.” She gave Marcos a quick hug. Maybe she should have given him a bigger one. But she felt sad and tired. He did, however, save them from a scary night in the Amazon. But she didn’t really know him that well.
