Chapter Two

“Oh my god, three new Google alerts about me have come in since this morning!” Cissy squealed. She was sitting cross-legged on the bed in her trailer, laptop on her knees, a sexy, ripped-shirt costume from the afternoon shoot still draping her scrawny frame.

Mason rolled his eyes. “How nice for you,” he replied. “Now, can you get changed so we can grab some food?” he asked, for what seemed the thousandth time. He didn’t know why he even bothered. It wasn’t as if there were any paparazzi on the island. He should be taking advantage of the rare opportunity to avoid hanging out with her.

“Damn in—the Internet’s out again. Why do I pay so much for satellite Internet access if it’s not even going to work when I need it?” Cissy cried in frustration, hurling the laptop across the bed. “I mean, The Superficial could be posting pictures of me in a bikini right this very second and I wouldn’t even know it!”

“Cissy,” he almost begged.

She glanced up, as if noticing him for the first time. “Oh baby, you’re hungry,” she cooed. “You should go without me. I’ve got all the food I need right here.” She reached over for the tub of strawberry jam on her dresser.

“That’s what you’re eating for dinner?” Mason frowned. “You’ve got action scenes to do tomorrow. You need carbs and protein, not freaking strawberry jelly.”

Cissy stuffed a spoonful in her mouth. “This is no ordinary jelly, I’ll have you know,” she declared. “These limitededition preserves are handmade by monks in the Himalayas. They’re packed with essential vitamins and minerals. I had them imported, because they’re impossible to find in LA.” She waved her now-empty spoon in the air. “Healthy and delicious.”

Mason rolled his eyes. “Whatever.” LA’s crazy food trends never failed to amaze him. “I’m going to get a real dinner—or at least some of the burned crap they serve around here.”

“Wait!” Cissy cried as he turned to leave.

He stopped, his shoulders slumped. “What?”

“You’re coming back tonight, right?” she asked, her voice suddenly plaintive, almost like a little girl’s. “Sleeping here?”

He let out a frustrated breath and turned to face her. “Cissy, we’re not going out. We’re not boyfriend and girlfriend, no matter what you read in the latest US Weekly.” He couldn’t believe how many times he’d had to remind her of this fact. “Our relationship is just for show. To sell movie tickets. I don’t even like you, remember?”

Cissy thrust out her lower lip in a pout. “Well, I don’t even like you, either,” she retorted. “You’re boring and stuck-up and stupid, and I’m calling my agent first thing in the morning to ask him if I can break up with you again.”

Mason sighed. “You know what he’s going to say. We’re stuck together until this disaster of a film gets released to DVD. So just suck it up and enjoy the fact that we’re currently out in the middle of nowhere and don’t have to spend any time getting photographed together.
