Chapter Six

The coffee shop he told me about was called A Dollop of Love. With a name like that, I knew I couldn’t resist. I sat at the metal table outside and had Coco Puff lay down while I tightened the leash before stepping on it. He then sat upright, trying to sniff other dogs who walked by with their owners. When Martin arrived, I sprang up far too eagerly to hug him. I gave him a toothless smile, and settled back in my chair.

“I’m glad you came. Are you still mad?”

I took a deep breath as I thought of my answer, then nodded. Laughing, I shook my head. “I was at first, but it’s not a big deal. Did you bring a picture of your painting? I’d love to see it.”

Scrunching his brows, he shook his head. “I can’t let you see it until it’s done. I had to see my muse for inspiration. Could you watch Nico while I grab us drinks?”

Nico and Coco Puff sniffed each other. Nico licked Coco Puff’s face, then he shook his head spraying slobber on my pant leg. Martin returned with two coffees and two raspberry scones in a brown paper bag with gray hearts all over it.

“Be careful, it’s hot,” he said.

“This is way cuter than my usual place. How did you find it?” I took the lid off my cup and blew on the coffee. Breaking off the corner of the scone, I plopped it into my mouth. The gooey filling was tart, an intense flavor on my tongue. “I need to make scones more often. How do I get their recipe?”

“This café has been around for a couple years now. My brother worked here for a short time and always brought the day-old baked goods home. I’ve been coming here ever since. Their recipes are probably locked in a vault in the back. Should I break in for you?”

I nodded, my mouth full of scone. Once I swallowed, I took a big swig of coffee. It dribbled down my chin, and I grabbed a napkin before he noticed. “Do you like living with your brother?”

He shrugged. “It’s more out of necessity. Our mother is sick and needs a lot of help around the house.”

“I’m sorry to hear that,” I placed my hand over his, “Is it serious?”

“The trials of getting old,” he rubbed my thumb with his, “I adopted Nico, hoping it would bring laughter into our home, but mostly we argue about who has to take care of him. Since it was my idea, it falls to me.”

“You sound like you regret adopting him.” I looked down at Nico, who had wound himself around the table leg. I guided him back around to untangle him.

“Not at all. There have been a lot of issues that I didn’t expect, but I’m committed to this dog. I hate people who adopt puppies, then give them away when they get too old.”

“Too many dogs don’t have homes. They need to run more of those commercials about the dog charities.
