CHAPTER 8
“Do you think she’d do it for old time’s sake?” Tavis asked. He slipped out of his sweatpants and tossed them on the bedroom floor. Barrett pressed her lips together and didn’t say anything. She had argued with him so many times about him throwing his clothing on the floor that she was sick of hearing herself talk about it.
“We’re not going down that road again,” Barrett protested.
“I thought you liked it.” Tavis climbed into bed and reached for his iPad.
“It was different. And it almost tore us apart,” she quietly reminded him. Barrett slid next to her husband then grabbed her iPad.
“Yep. And that’s why I don’t understand why you let her return.”
Barrett glanced up from her tablet, irritation flashing across her face. “She was having a rough time. Everybody knows that the economy sucks, and she wanted something respectable. I wanted to help her. And I guess a part of me feels that if I’m ever in that situation, someone would help me too.”
“Why would you want to help somebody like her?” Tavis asked meanly.
Barrett arched an eyebrow at him. “What are you talking about?”
Tavis shrugged. “She’s nothing but a glorified baby sitter and a former ho. I bet if I do a Google search for the definition of ho, her picture would pop up,” he joked.
“That is the lady who’s watching your, I mean, our children,” Barrett said quietly. “What do you have to say about that?”
Tavis threw his hands up. “Hey you know how I feel about it. I don’t want her here. I don’t trust her. I wish she was gone.”
“But two minutes ago, you wanted to fuck her!”
Tavis chuckled. “Hell, I never said she was ugly. That lady is fine, with a capital F. I’d fuck her every day of the week.”
Barrett stared at her husband and shook her head, unable to find the words she wanted. Tavis had changed, it started four years ago when she kicked Sage out. At first she blamed it on her pregnancy, then after Kelsey was born, she blamed it on their changing lifestyle, then T.J. was born and their marriage had deteriorated even further.
With their extremely busy work schedules, date nights had become non-existent, eating dinner together became nil and even having a conversation became a rarity. They communicated via text messages, occasional phone calls and Post-it notes stuck on their granite island.
They were both silent while they sat side by side on their bed, working on their iPads. Barrett was the first to put hers down. She had already done her bedtime ritual: removing her makeup, showering, putting on moisturizing cream, tying her hair up, then dressing in her pajamas. Tonight she had on a black thigh length nightgown. She looked good, even without any makeup and her hair tied up.
She glanced at her husband, still focused on his iPad. The only thing he had on were boxers. His body was tight for a man his age. His biceps bulged, he had a six pack and if he stood she would see an ass so taut and firm that it even made her jealous.
