I thought this might interest you. I think Helen may have given me this translation, but I’m not sure. If she did, I sincerely thank her. The reason I believe she likely gave this to me is that Helen was good at written communications through the years and I’ll always give her credit for remembering family birthdays whether or not this kind gesture was reciprocated.
Let me know how you're doing and what changes you'd like to see in the play.
Love ya, Care

Hey Care,
Glad you're having a great summer.
The Demo convention basically shut down the city, but nothing seriously bad happened. I frankly wished I were a St. Paul resident for the Repub convention. Obama was good, but boilerplate. I thought Sarah Palin was absolute, total dynamite, even though I disagree with her on some issues....smart and funny....especially her line: “The difference between a Pitt Bull and a Hockey Mom is [drum roll] LIPSTICK!!”
Moving on, sis. You wrote such an intriguing email, raising so many interesting questions. The most irresistible part for me (I'm not at all sure I am interpreting this part correctly so correct me if I'm wrong) is that Ma seems to be referring to an uncle of ours while saying that her brother apparently never wrote back to either her or his own mother once he moved to America. I am assuming that is Uncle Joe, whom I vaguely recall. I think he was married to Aunt Margaret. I remember Uncle Joe drank beer when we visited Washington D.C. - that Aunt Margaret smoked, that neither Mom or Dad liked them much, that we swam in what was probably Delaware Bay, and that I got stung by jelly-fish. It was SOooo painful, that's why I remember it. You remember so much more of this stuff than I do.
Emotionally, I know my memories are essentially correct, if not totally factual, which is why I rely on your feedback. You were enough older than me to correct the details of my sometimes vague recollections.
Do you know any more about Ma's reference to her own Dad? I'm intrigued that I have a vague recollection of Ma saying he went to a mental hospital, that Ma threatened us kids with that (and honestly, you and I don't know if she did that to all the siblings) and that she referenced her Dad and a mental hospital in that diary. I am absolutely fascinated by this. My feeling is that your play should incorporate her diary in a major way. I'd no idea Mom's writing about her then-young life was so personal. Poignant stuff, so glad you got hold of that important history. Don't know why I remember the stuff I do, but your email was great.
Have you started thinking of actors, a producer, etc. for your production?
Keep on, someone has to tell our story, you are by far the most qualified to do it honestly and sensitively.
Warmest regards, L, R
