The 4% club

The New Orleans Contrarian Investing Conference was fast approaching and I found myself spending all my free time researching the finer details of attending. As I was investing over $3,000 to cover my travel costs, accommodation, and admission, not to mention the five days and nights out of my valuable schedule, it was the prudent thing to do.

Aside from getting the most bang for my buck, I wanted to be prepared. I was about to take a meaningful and pricey departure away from the investment philosophy I had stuck with for most of my life, so not only did I want to know everything there was to know about what I was getting into, but I wanted to be able to capitalize efficiently on my time spent at the conference. If I was going to be a participant, I needed to participate.

There would be over five hundred different companies showcasing their assets and as many senior executives to talk to, so I even went so far as to research these. Over and above the myriad of investment opportunities, there would be dozens of well-respected newsletter writers to listen to and a keynote debate featuring a Republican, a Democrat, and a revered Libertarian. I could hardly wait.

The flight from Seattle to New Orleans was around six hours, providing me with enough time for one last skim over everything I’d learned in the past months. We had covered the demographics of population growth, more people consuming more things, and how technology would affect and be affected by it all.

While it was true that it was difficult to predict the short-term effects of government policy and economic earthquakes, especially in a post-crisis world, this unstoppable army of new consumers would be our focus when we touched down in New Orleans. I was going to apply these months of hard work to try to find the proverbial needle in a haystack. I had found my first major theme in population growth, but I wanted to secure something else to follow closely, meet a mentor to help guide me with updates in the future, and hopefully land some contrarian investments. And if all else failed, Johnny had attended this conference many times, so he was my trump card.

When we rolled out of Louis Armstrong International to hail a cab, the first thing to hit me was the heat. It was hot but not too humid, a welcome departure from the relentless downpour that had overtaken Washington state since the first leaves had begun to fall.

“Your first time to the Big Easy?” Johnny asked when I stopped for a minute to take off my jacket. “I told you that you wouldn’t need that jacket.”

“It’s fantastic. I’m finally crossing it off the bucket list I never knew I had.”

“This is my favorite city in the world and you’re about to see why. We’re staying in the hotel attached to the show. I always do. Not only does it save time, all the major CEOs and speakers are there too.
