CHAPTER ELEVEN

BRIDIE

Khatija didn’t drink because of her Muslim faith, so she drove Buster, myself, and Lola to Cody’s.

Behind us, Washington drove his friend’s Chevy. In his car were Shontelle, Ameera, and Lucy. A few more of my friends were meeting us at Cody’s.

As we drove up, we gasped at the sight of the place.

It had been transformed – fairy lights all over Cody’s section of the house, Chinese lanterns lined the drive way and music blared from the house. On the patio were tables with food and a barman stood behind a make-shift bar.

The night was balmy and the vibe was great.

When Cody saw me, he let out a long wolf whistle. “Come here, you!” he said, grabbed me, dipped me, then kissed me.

“The place is beautiful!” I gushed. “Thank you, honey.”

Time for introductions. I introduced them all to Jenna, Scott, Stephanie, and Colonel .

With the exception of Stephanie, they were all cordial toward my family and friends. Jenna had a knowing smile on her face and I expected her to say something inappropriate, but she didn’t, to my surprise. I was relieved about that.

Stephanie, even though she said nothing, eyed them all the time as if they were vermin or something, and my feelings alternated between nervousness and anger.

I found myself wishing that Buster had lost some weight, and that Lola had not worn her hooker heels and feather boa, that Khatija wouldn’t wear her permanent scowl, that Shontelle wouldn’t laugh so loud, and that Ameera wouldn’t tell everybody that she and her family had migrated to the States from Iraq.

All because of Stephanie. The facetious bitch.

Anyway, in spite of my mixed bag of feelings and in spite of Stephanie’s mocking disposition, I was having a great time and danced a lot.

Of course, my honey didn’t need an invitation to dance – he boogie woogied the moment the music came on. He swung me around, dipped me, then kissed me.

“Scott is hoooot!” Shontelle whispered in my ear.

“Oh, yes!” Ameera said. “Is he seeing anyone?”

I lifted and dropped my shoulders. “Never seen him with anyone.”

“Come, let me introduce you guys to him again,” I said, steering them toward Scott.

When they were laughing and talking, I left them and headed to find Cody.

Washington met a blonde at the party, who actually resembled Heidi Klum! I couldn’t believe it. Anyway, they seemed really cozy and I was a little perturbed about it. I mean, he was dating Margarita, wasn’t he?

Then, just before midnight, Cody announced a mini Laser Light show on a giant black screen in the garden in front of us.

He stood behind me with his arms around my waist and his chin on my shoulder as we oohed! and aaahed!

It was like a fireworks show on New Year’s Eve without the fireworks themselves – hundreds of patterns, different colored lights, and it played to music too.

The grand finale was spectacular and ended with the words, Bridie, will you marry me?

I gasped. “Ohmigod!” Was I imagining it? After all, I had downed a number of shots.
