âIâm Getting Institutionalisedâ
I settled in my bed at about 10 p.m., waiting for my night-time IV antibiotics. The ward was particularly busy that night, and it took two hours before they could give me my antibiotics. I tried to sleep after midnight. My sleep was always poor, and I would wake up at about 4 a.m. In the beginning, when the repairing process was taking place, I didnât mind much because at least I could look forward to this happening. The strangely pleasant sensation in my head, right arm, and leg happened every night while I was recovering, and I could feel the power coming back in my hands and legs. This was a sign that I was getting better. Indeed, I could move my arm, and my grip was improving. I would wake up very excited and quickly go back to bed to have a snooze between 5 and 6 a.m. I was extremely grateful for the night staff, who managed to give me my antibiotics between 7 and 8 a.m. However, if this was not done, then I would have to wait for the day staff to give them to me after their handover; this was usually at 9 a.m. Partly, I didnât want to miss my precious breakfast of cereals, toast, and a nice cup of tea! I considered tea the best drink of the day.
The same applied to my speech. The repair process in my brain was taking place in the early hours of the morning. I would ring home first thing in the morning, and sometimes I would wake up my wife to speak to her. This was to show off that my speech was coming back. Unfortunately, at the beginning it would last maybe ten minutes. I told her what I wanted to tell her as quickly as possible; otherwise, it would go in the middle of the conversation, which happened once or twice, and it was disappointing. I was worried it might not come back the next day, but it always did for a short period. As time went by, it started lasting a little longer.
Then the routine would start again. The ward felt like a community in a supportive and caring environment where everyone did their bit. The ward was very clean, and the cleaner cleaned my room twice a day. That was good because I didnât want to pick up another infection like MRSA, the so-called super-bug. Staphylcoccus aureus is a common bacteria carried on the skin, nose, and throat. It usually causes mild infection, but it can cause serious infection when it gets on broken skin.
The catering staff gave us a menu to choose what we wanted for lunch and supper over the next few days. I must say some meals were quite appetising. The portions were rather small, so one had to drink plenty of water while having the meal to feel full. The other trick was to be particularly nice to the catering staff, who could give extra portions on occasions.
